Mining Building

Opportunistically sited within unused attic space of the historic Mining Building, the Lassonde Institute synthesizes heritage resources and state-of-the-art systems to create a high performance environment for next generation learning and collaboration.  Putting into practice the lessons of the classroom, this low energy project exceeds current 2030 Challenge benchmarks and is tracking to become University of Toronto’s first LEED Platinum project.

Inverting the ‘mine shaft’, the project orchestrates a vertical transition from dark/light, grade/rooftop, solid/diaphanous. The controlled use and transformation of daylight marks this transition, serving as the project’s design and environmental driver.
